Designer Interview: Cameron Moll

Cameron Moll
Cameron is the founder of Authentic Jobs and loves designing posters with type. All while listening to music, of course.
What are you listening to right now?
Right now? Well, whatever Pandora serves up. Currently playlist: "Ray LaMontagne"
How is music important to your design process?
I wouldn't call it critical, at least not for me. The more I design, the more I'm finding there's no perfect storm; no set of criteria that can guarantee great design. Sometimes inspiration hits at bizarre times and in bizarre places. That said, music certainly plays a big role in helping me design. Sometimes it serves as motivation, other times to accompany lengthy design session, and often to block out other distractions.
I love the new Authentic Jobs design; what did you listen to when you were working on it?
I've got pretty eclectic tastes when it comes to music. I don't recall exactly what I listened to while designing Authentic Jobs, but I bet it included some of these selections:
Pandora playlists:
- Ray LaMontagne
- Explosions in the Sky
- Ella Fitzgerald
- Frank Sinatra...
Classical:
- Beethoven Symphony No. 9
- The Four Seasons
- Frédéric Chopin...
Jazz:
- Miles Davis
- John Coltrane
- Diana Krall...
Soundtracks:
- Searching for Bobby Fischer
- Dances with Wolves
- Pride & Prejudice
- Bourne Ultimatum...
Anything I've added to …

Making Some Small Adjustments
by Jonathan Longnecker | January 10, 2010 | Filed in Beta, Design
Thanks to everyone's great input, we've modified how some of the internal linkage works when viewing albums. Before, the large green button at the bottom of the album popup would take you straight to Amazon.
Yeah that's great, send your users away from the site first thing. Good job, guys. So in an attempt to get users to actually explore the site a bit more that button now takes you to the album detail page. We also added the user that submitted the album back in with a link to their profile.
We also wanted to make sure users understood why we were funneling them to Amazon so we added a small disclaimer bar at the top of each album page that explains what's going on. This gives the user a much easier way to get back to DM as well as reinforcing how they got there.
The jury's still out on whether we need the album preview in the popup window or if we should only have it on the detail page. If you have an opinion, let us know in the comments. Launch is coming soon, and …

Welcome to the Beta!
by Jonathan Longnecker | July 04, 2009 | Filed in Beta, General
I never thought we'd be going "beta," but here we are. We need your help testing for bugs and adding to the library so there will be lots of rad music when we launch. I've tried to get as much of the basic functionality working as I can for now, and while we're always open to suggestions (i.e. feature requests) that will probably come later after we launch and get some momentum. We really want to keep this as simple as we can right now and build complexity later as we see fit. So the goal right now is to test this pretty quickly (2 weeks max) and get it live. A few quick things to look out for:
- Jumping back and forth between artwork and list view
- We need more job types (categories), please suggest any you can think of.
- Test auto-completion in submission area
- I haven't looked at this in Internet Explorer at all and I don't plan to. Test only in Firefox, Safari, etc...
Thanks so much for your help; together we hope we can create an amazing resource for designers to find kick-awesome music!
